Fibromyalgia - Improving quality of life through exercise
Fibromyalgia syndrome is a chronic condition in which people suffer from a variety of symptoms. Symptoms can include widespread pain, sleep disorders, fatigue and cognitive dysfunction. Any and all of these can have a negative impact on a persons physical and emotional function leading to a reduction in quality of life. For 25 years researchers have been studying the benefits of exercise for people with this syndrome. We now have multiple high-quality reviews and meta-analyses showing support for the use of exercise on reducing symptoms severity and increasing overall quality of life. This is just a summary of the exercises and in no way meant to treat.
So what exercises can one suffering from fibromyalgia syndrome do to help reduce their symptoms? Aerobic exercise can improve oxygen uptake while decreasing pain and fatigue levels. Strength training can reduce the all around severity of symptoms. Aquatic exercise improved pain scores, quality of life, and physical fitness level and function. It was also beneficial for emotional and mental health, in addition to increasing vitality. Physical fitness stimulated activity in pain regulating brain centers thereby decreasing the perceived pain. Mindbody techniques reduced symptom severity and improved quality of life. More importantly, they actually surpassed that of exercise as well as pharmacological intervention. Mindbody techniques studied were Tai chi, Yoga, breathing exercises, and Pilates.
Not all of the exercises listed will be helpful for everyone with fibromyalgia. It's important for practitioners and patients to understand the psychological needs and physical fitness levels of each person when using mindbody techniques and exercise. Many people suffering from fibromyalgia syndrome have been through traumatic situations. It may be necessary to address these first before incorporating exercise into a daily routine.
